Reflection Lake at Mount Rainier National Park

As I write this, I’m sitting in my hotel room, plotting my sunset adventure for my last night in Mount Rainier National Park. I’ve been here a few times already, the first back in 2009 (before I was into landscape photography, go figure!), and then again three years ago (in 2012). I was hoping to get away from the heat wave we’ve been having in Portland, as well as to get out and use my camera (which has been collecting dust far too long this summer).

This time of year, there is usually an abundance of wildflowers blooming all over the park. In fact, the last time I visited was in the month of September, and the fields were filled with colorful flowers. However, the sky was so foggy that I never even saw the mountain!

On this trip, aside from an epic sunset on the first night, I am having the opposite problem: very few wildflowers, and clear skies. The wildflower bloom was early this year, likely due to the heat and lack of rain we have had in the Pacific Northwest, and so there are only a few colorful flowers scattered throughout the park. But I’m still having a really nice, relaxing time, and also getting some great photos.
