Happy New Year!

It’s official, we have arrived in 2015! This past year for me was filled with change and rejuvenation. I moved back to Portland, and, other than a trip to Thailand early in the year, it was a quiet year for me in terms of travel. I spent a lot of time growing my brand, my online store, and getting cozy in my new home. It was a good year.

One thing that is always mulling through my brain is the phrase “What’s next?”. Whether it’s travel, photography projects, eBooks, or tutorials, I’m always excited about what I can accomplish if I put my mind to it. A new year means a fresh start, and a great time to rev up those engines.

Doing What I Love

One of the advantages of working for myself is that I get to choose what to create. And I love my job. I love teaching, writing about, and creating photography. I have a lot of things in store for this year. A new book with Peachpit, at least a few self-published eBooks, video tutorials for my online store and Patreon, and some really epic, bucket-list-busting travel. But I’ve still left some room for the unknown, the last-minute adventures and spur-of-the-moment creations. If everything were planned, then life would be boring. I like surprises. :)

Growth and Opportunity

Overall, this year my goal is to grow as an artist. It can be easy to get a little too comfortable when things are running smoothly. My business is running strong, and I’m in a great place and off a killer start for the new year. But I’m no stranger to risk. Just a few weeks ago I cancelled my exclusivity with iStock, and soon after I was accepted into Stocksy, an up-and-coming co-operative stock organization. I plan on using the opportunity as a fresh start, a “rebirth” of sorts for me with stock photography and photography in general. Getting involved with microstock in 2006, along with a good dose of motivation, helped me improve my photography by leaps and bounds, and I am well overdue for a refresher.

Whatever your goals are for the year, I wish you success! Whether it’s tomorrow or six months from today, the future is uncertain. I guess, though, that’s what keeps us on our toes.
