As a photographer, we will typically want a place where we can display a portfolio of our work, as well as sell prints or downloads of our images. And, because we are visual people, the presentation of that display is important to us. Thankfully, SmugMug knows that too! They just launched their brand-new site yesterday (here’s the link with their blog post that explains everything). I’ve been a customer for over a year now, and I have to say that the improvements are spectacular. My site now looks like a professional portfolio where I can also seamlessly present and distribute my photographs.

Other than the overall look and new designs, the biggest change they made is the ease of customization. You can see how in just a matter of minutes I was able to get a completely brand-new look for my site using WYSIWYG and drag-and-drop. In fact, I now have merged my portfolio and prints site to be one-and-the-same over on SmugMug (they used to be on two different websites). I’m pretty sure that I’ll go in and make little changes over time, considering that the customization features are just so easy to use.

BTW, if you want to get an account of your own, be sure to use the discount code NICOLESY to save 20% off your new SmugMug account :)

Here’s a quick comparison of the old site (left image) versus the new site (right image) … I used to have it designed so that it looked like a seamless integration to my website. I decided to scrap that and go for a polished portfolio presentation of my work.

    Hi Nicole,
I’ve been a customer of SmugMug for a few years and was looking for another solution until they came out with their update. I just could never get the customization I wanted before, but now I can! For the life of me, though, I can’t figure out how you got your image info to appear in the lightbox view?
Hey, btw, I’ve been a fan of your food photography for a few years, but I’m loving your landscapes as well!

Are you referring to when I click on an image and it pops up full-screen? I think it just did that by default. Maybe it depends on the theme you pick? The one I’m using is NYX, so maybe give that a try to see if it works that way. Their forums are pretty good, too, and other people may have the same problem as you are.

    Hi Nicole.
Thanks for alerting me to SMUGMUG. I purchased the $60 package for $48 thanks to your discount code. I am a hobbyist and did not need to purchase the professional packages that provided services for selling photos. Instead, I setup my store on SHOOTPROOF, which provides these professional services for free for up to 100 photos. The hosting of 100 photos is enough for me for now. I then linked my SMUGMUG pages to my store on SHOOTPROOF and I am very happy with the result.
    Thanks Again,
    Rich Davis
