Nuclear Symmetry

Canon 5DMkIII, Canon TS-E 17mm lens, 1/15 sec at f/5.6, ISO 400.
Edited with onOne Software‘s Perfect Effects 4.

Last week a group of us photogs got the coolest experience ever—we photographed inside the cooling towers and reactor room of a (moth-balled and never used) nuclear facility. It was almost surreal to step inside the giant cooling tower and feel like a tiny little ant (they’re ginormous!), and the acoustics in those things are amazing! I stood right in the middle and sang at the top of my lungs for a few seconds to listen to the echoes.

The other awesome photographers I was with got some great images as well … check out their streams to look for more! +Brian Matiash +Brian Bonham +Arno Jenkins +Amy Heiden +Christopher Germano +Tressa Crozier +Joe Azure +Jeffrey Yen

I bet you were all glowing when you left, and I don't mean because you were happy… I know, I know it was never used.. just couldn't resist.

+Nicole S. Young Is it hard to gain access to those places? Usually you hear about high levels of security near nuclear facilities, even ones that are non-functional.

+Jeremy Hodges Nope, just give them a call and ask for a tour. It's free, they have keys to get you into all the cool spots.
