Compositing Fun with onOne Software

Home|Blog, ON1 Photo, Photography|Compositing Fun with onOne Software

I was working on this image yesterday, and thought I’d share my results. I used Perfect Mask to remove the background, and Focal Point to blur the new background separately so that it blended with the rock climber.

And, if you’re familiar with any of my other books this is the same model and location who posed for my book-cover of my Canon 60D book. :) (http://bit.ly/OO7TRyBTW, if you’re interested in any of the onOne software products, use the discount code NICOLESY for 15% off. :)

your choice of background makes it look like she's lying on the rock, instead of climbing it.

The original makes it obvious that the camera is directly above (in the vertical plane) the subject, but the new background makes it look like the camera is at nearly the same horizontal plane as the subject.

So while it makes for a prettier background, it makes the photo a little less impressive.

Perfectly done!  Course, I was bothered by the change in perspective, but the fact that it seemed to change the activity (from climbing to crawling) is a testament to your composting success!

Edit: It really helps the effect that the "side" light that hits the cliff is an absolute match for what appears to be overhead desert mid-day in the composite.

I like it +Nicole S. Young and I believe, the perception +Brian Chu  accurately described is only caused by the amount  of background shown.  Crop just below the road and suddenly you're looking straight down at her again. The distant  hill and mountain flattens it.  Either way it's pretty cool.

pretty good other then it looks like she is laying on the rocks rather then climbing up them.  Good mask replace and blur though.

It's a cool result, but I wonder if using a different photo as a background would've been wiser. It fits so well that it appears to be shot in situ, so that her feat of climbing seems less impressive (and mostly horizontal).

pick pick pick…Based on what it actually is and not what others think or want it to be I love the way you matched the tonality of the images. That is often the biggest mistake I see. Nice work!

The great thing about people criticizing is that they only use their words and rarely ever have meaningful content displayed to back them up.

You rocked it here both in the results and in paying it forward with your workflow knowledge. Thanks for helping to spread some onOne love! We're really excited to use this example in our global demo library.

Great job with the background, but as a climber the shot loses a lot of interest.  In the bottom left photo you have a feeling of height, after the new background is add the perspective has changed and it looks like she is laying on a flat rock after the climb not actually climbing.
