Jeremy Hall put together this awesome video on our recent “Studio Lighting Photowalk”. It’s one of the largest Photowalking Utah events of the year and he really did a good job of portraying the spirit of our photography community.
Thanks to everyone who helped out and participated … the event was an overall success and I was glad I could be a part of it. The photography community here is why I am making Utah my new home and it’s the people at events like the one in the video that makes me realize I made the right choice. :)

Here’s a fun photo of me jumping up on the trampoline during setup the Friday before the Studio Lighting Photowalk. The very talented Sarah Legg (you might recognize her father) photographed this for me. I thought it looked kinda silly doing what we refer to as the “High School Musical” jump so I wanted to share it with my readers, lol. ;)
A big thanks to BorrowLenses.com for the use of the Canon 16-35 f/2.8L lens!

The Studio Lighting Photowalk on Saturday was awesome! If you saw any of my recent blog posts you probably know that I had a Lensbaby setup for the photowalkers. I was standing in the same spot for more than three hours helping people swap lenses and learn (briefly) how to shoot with a Lensbaby Composer and the Creative Aperture Kit. The time went really fast and I had a lot of fun watching everyone enjoy a Lensbaby for the first time (there were probably only two or three people who had ever used one before the event).
Luckily I was at the location the night before doing some setup, so I did get a chance to photograph Andrew rockin’ to the guitar on the trampoline. We are already coming up with some amazing ideas for next year’s event, and will hopefully have a larger venue (which means more setups and shorter lines) … so stay tuned!

The Photowalking Utah “Studio Lighting Photowalk” is tomorrow morning, and a small group of us set up some of the stations this evening in preparation for the big event. A friend of mine, Sawyer, did some quick modeling for me so I could test out the lights and exposure with some of the different Lensbaby bokeh shapes (which are part of the Lensbaby Creative Aperture Kit). This star shaped one worked perfectly with the setup, along with a heart, flower, snowflake and normal (f/4) shapes.
I’m really excited to see all the other photographers get to experience the nine studio lighting setups that will be available. It should be a LOT of fun. :)

This weekend is the third annual “Studio Lighting Photowalk” in Draper, Utah and I’m doing a “Lensbaby Portrait” setup. Rich and I did some test shots in his studio last night to make sure we had everything set up correctly … and it worked like a charm! (Here’s a link to the behind-the-scenes shot of the setup.) If you will be at the event and have a Canon or Nikon then you will be able to use a Lensbaby (I will provide them at the shoot) to make your own images like the one above.
I’m really excited to attend (and work) this event since it’s my first one … we should have a LOT of people and some really cool light setups (*cough* trampoline *cough*) so if you are in the area be sure to stop by. And if you’re free tonight don’t miss out on the portrait clinic at the downtown SLC Library! :)
All the details for these and future events can be found at the Photowalking Utah website.

Last night there were more than 130 people at the Photowalking Utah “Holiday Light Clinic and Photowalk” – I’m pretty sure that’s a record for the Photowalking Utah group … wow! We started out at the library, where Rich Legg gave a wonderful presentation on photographing in low-light situations. Then we headed out (all 130 of us) on the TRAX train to photograph the beautiful Christmas lights of Temple Square, downtown Salt Lake City Utah.
This was my second time in Temple Square and my first time seeing it all decked-out with Christmas lights. It was really crowded, and I was so busy talking and meeting new people that I barely took any photos. ;) The display was absolutely beautiful, and I do plan on heading down there before the end of the year on my own to get some more shots.

Here is the final video from the Lensbaby Photowalk in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 7, 2009. Thanks to everyone who attended, and special thanks to both Pictureline and Lensbaby for making this event possible!

The first-ever (that I am aware of, at least) Lensbaby photowalk was a success! Over 60 photographers met up at Pictureline in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, each with a Lensbaby to use for the photowalk (courtesy of both Lensbaby and Pictureline) and roamed around the block snapping photos. From what I could tell everyone was having a great time. I’m a big fan of the Lensbaby product and was really happy that others had a good chance to try one out for themselves.
A huge thanks go to both Jens and Nick at Pictureline for making all of the arrangements, and also to Lensbaby for supplying the demo lenses for all of the participants who needed to borrow one.

This past weekend we had a really great turnout at the Photowalking Utah “Old Greek Town” photowalk. More than 50 photographers showed up and, after a risky group photo (video here, thanks to Jeremy Hall!), we made our way through the streets of downtown Salt Lake during the beautiful “golden hour” of the evening.
I’m always surprised at how many new faces we see at each event! It really solidifies the fact that Utah has an amazing photographic community, and I’m very proud to be a part of it. For me the “photography” aspect of the get-together is just an excuse to hang out with a great group of people. ;) It’s also really neat to talk to the passers-by asking about the group and what we are doing … I guess that’s what happens when several dozen photographers go walking down a sidewalk together!
Congratulations to Alex Gallivan for his winning image from the Salt Lake City “Worldwide Photo Walk“. The angles and colors in this image really caught my attention … well done! There were lots of great images to choose from which picking the winning entry a difficult decision … you can see the other entries here.
