I used my Lensbaby a lot this year. I even took at least one photo-per-day with it for an entire month to try to improve my skills (mostly speed in focusing). Today’s photo is one of the images I created during that time … this was taken while driving through Las Vegas on the way to Photoshopworld. I can’t really put my finger on why I like it so much. It’s probably a combination of the light (the “golden hour”), the bokeh from the lights in the background and the trail of cars in the mirror. Really, when you think about it, the subject is not too interesting but the combination of lots of other factors made it look really cool. :)

Nikon D200, Nikon 24-70 lens, 1/125th sec at f/2.8, ISO 100
Photographed on August 9, 2009
In August I drove up to Calgary to attend the iStockphoto “HQ ‘lypse”, an event where iStock artists get together and create images/videos/illustrations to license on the website. This was one of the last few images I photographed, and it ended up being not only my favorite from the event, but from the entire year. Those little kids were so cute and had so much fun, and you can really see it in their expressions.
You can view the image on iStock here.

I don’t do a lot of “action” photography, but this year I had the chance to attend several rodeos and a demolition derby, and before this year I had never attended either type of event. I remember having a lot of fun, but felt frustrated because of the limitations of my Nikon D200 (mostly with ISO, since it only goes to 1600). However I did get a lot of great images, and this one stands out as my favorite of them all.
I’m looking forward to next year when I can use my new 7D at the same events. :)

I take a lot of photos of people, and this image was a quick shot I took of my good friend Rich at the Worldwide Photowalk in July. But even though it didn’t take much setting up or preparation, there are so many things about this image that I like … sometimes the best portraits are the ones you didn’t know you were going to take. :) It’s a genuine expression, there is a nice soft light on his face, I really like the catchlights in his eyes and there’s even a nice hair-light in the back. You just gotta love natural lighting … it’s the best light there is!
